Director-General of the Department of Tourism Supol Sripan stated that the department has asked the government to allocate a budget of 2.6 billion baht for the development of tourist attractions and promote related activities so that tourism earnings will reach two trillion baht by 2015. The budget will be spent on the project called “Miracle Thailand Year”. This project involves 3 workplans which are attractions and services development, tour guide business development and filming encouragement, and facilitation to be provided for foreign tourists in travelling to Thailand.
However, the budget request is yet to be considered by the House’s Budget Committee and approved by the House of Representatives.
Mr. Supol also mentioned that there are over 2,000 tourist attractions in the country, 385 of which need to be renovated.
