YASOTHON – About 700 residents of Yasothon and Amnat Charoen provinces joined hands to build a check dam at the Lam Se Bai River in Mueang Amnat Charoen district, in a bid to increase water reserves.

The residents from both provinces raised 50,000 baht to purchase 4,000 sandbags and donated sand, bamboo, and rope for the cause. They were also joined by military officials from 1st Infantry Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment.

Yasothon Governor Boontham Lertsukhikasem said the check dam would store water during drought season for residents in six villages from both provinces. He instructed officials from the Department of Local Administration in Yasothon to conduct a feasibility study on building more check dams in other locations along the Lam Se Bai River.

Mr. Boontham stressed that each check dam must be funded independently of the state budget and instead rely on the locals’ contributions. The governor claimed that this approach would also foster unity among the people.
