US ambassador to meet with Labor Ministry on human trafficking problem

BANGKOK, 30 July 2012  – The US ambassador is scheduled to discuss with the Thai Ministry of Labor this week about the issue of human trafficking and the measure to repatriate pregnant migrant labors. 

Permanent Secretary for Labor Somkiat Chayasriwong revealed that US Ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kenney will meet with Labor Minister Phadermchai Sasomsab to find a solution to the problem of human trafficking. Another important topic is the idea of sending pregnant alien workers back to their home countries for delivery.

Mr. Somkiat said in preparation for the discussion with Mrs. Kenney, he has instructed his deputy, Mrs. Songsri Boonba, to collect all the information necessary to help promote common ground on the issues at hand, especially when Thailand is on the US human trafficking watch list.

Meanwhile, Employment Department Director-General Prawit Kiangpol has also been assigned to carry out a study on how to deal with the pregnancy of migrant labors in Thailand.
