BANGKOK, Dec 2 – Thais have been urged to donate blood as the nation is now facing major blood shortage due to the ongoing political turmoil in the country.

The Thai Red Cross on Monday issued an emergency request for blood as the nation is now facing a critical shortage. Red Cross stated that donations have been very low in the past month as a result of political protests, forcing delays of blood donation.

Many people are reportedly afraid to leave their homes to donate blood at the Red Cross Headquarters on Henry Dunant Road near the protest sites.

The Red Cross says 1,500 units of blood are needed daily in Bangkok alone, while hospitals nationwide require 3,000 units of blood supply a day. Since November donations in the capital have fallen to only some 1,000 units a day which has led to the current shortage.
