BANGKOK, 17 March 2011 (NNT) – Thai Airways International (THAI) will not suspend its daily flights to Japan despite concerns over radiation leaks from nuclear power plants damaged by the massive quake and tsunami that hit the country last week.

According to THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand, the airline has maintained its normal daily direct flights to Japan, including Bangkok- Narita and Bangkok- Haneda routes. It has been reported that transportation systems in Tokyo at present remain somewhat inconvenient.

Cabin crews and airplanes are not to stay overnight in Japan and to fly back to Thailand immediately to prevent risks. In addition, foods and beverages served on board are also loaded from Bangkok to reduce radioactive contamination risks, said the president.

THAI has also drawn up a contingency plan, under which all flights from Bangkok will depart for Osaka or Nagoya instead if the radioactive leakage situation escalates to the extent that Japanese authorities prohibit aircraft from flying within 100 kilometers of Fukushima power plant.

In addition, THAI will not increase its air fares from Thailand to Japan for the time being, remaining at 13,000 baht for a one-way trip exclusive of applicable tax and other fees.
