BANGKOK, July 5 – The Thai government on Friday expressed concern at the current political situation in Egypt and hoped the country would speedily return to normalcy and stability.

“As a long-standing friend of Egypt, the Royal Thai Government is confident that the people of Egypt will be able to overcome the present challenges and believes that the future of Egypt should be determined by the people of Egypt,” according to an official statement released by the Thai foreign ministry.

“Thailand also hopes that all parties concerned in Egypt would work together in the interest of peace, stability and democratic process in Egypt,” the statement said.

The Thai embassy in Cairo has been in constant contact with Thai nationals in Egypt and has advised them to refrain from travelling to risk areas. There have been no reports of Thai nationals being affected by the situation so far.

According to the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, about two thousand Thai nationals now live in Egypt, with the majority, 1,820, as students. Most are now in Thailand as schools are closed for vacation.

The foreign ministry issued a travel advisory asking Thai nationals wishing to travel to Egypt to monitor the situation regularly, avoid travel to places of demonstrations, and stay in contact with the embassy.
