Thai children want high-end gadgets as gifts from PM

BANGKOK, Jan 11 – Thai youngsters want IPads, tablet computers and smartphones as gifts and will go to amusement parks on Children’s Day, according to a university survey.

A poll conducted by Bangkok University among 1,115 children aged 6-14  in Bangkok and its suburbs found the majority of children wanted their parents to take them to amusement parks on National Children’s Day. The second favourite destinations are beaches and zoos.

Many government premises including Government House, Parliament House and the Royal Thai Air Force are open on Children’s Day tomorrow.

The poll found that the highest number of children (19.7 per cent) wanted IPads or tablets as gifts from the prime minister, followed by smartphones (15.3 per cent) and big dolls (12.2 per cent).

The Children’s Day slogan for this year is “Keep discipline, keen on learning, augment wisdom, usher Thailand to ASEAN.”

Children said that being “keen on learning” is the most possible resolution to achieve (46.9 per cent), followed by to  “keep discipline” (28.8 per cent), “usher Thailand to ASEAN” (13.7 per cent) and “augment wisdom” (8.9 per cent) while 1.7 per cent said they could not follow any point of the slogan.

The children’s number one dream job is being a physician (14 per cent), followed by being teachers or police, while 4.2 per cent said they wanted to become prime minister or go into politics.

Asked about the qualifications of a good person, they defined such a person as kind-hearted and generous (38 per cent), honest (36.4 per cent) and diligent/patient (15 per cent).

They called on adults to live in harmony and to stop bickering (33.6 per cent), be honest and not be corrupt (23.7 per cent) and to set a good example for the younger generation (11.1 per cent).
