BANGKOK – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has opened a public hearing on the planned construction of a double-track railway between Surat Thani, Hat Yai Junction and Songkhla to optimize a public transport system in urban and rural areas.

In 2012, the government assigned the Ministry of Transport to conduct a feasibility and suitability study in bid to accelerate the development of the southern double-track railway project (Bangkok – Chumporn – Sungai Kolok and Padang Besar) and the implementation of an infrastructure investment plan.

In 2015, the SRT assigned a group of consultant firms to conduct a feasibility study and outline details of the double-track railway construction project for Surat Thani, Hat Yai Junction and Songkhla.
