BANGKOK, 23 April 2015 – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has reported that the number of registered pre-paid SIM cards has so far exceeded 30 million, confirming its belief that registration of pre-paid SIM card users should be completed with the July 31 deadline.

To speed up the task, the Department of Provincial Administration has allowed 2,436 district registration offices to provide SIM card registration services to local residents. The NBTC has restated the need for cell phone users to register their SIM cards within July 31 to keep them active. Those failing to register their SIM cards in time will be unable to surf the Internet or send SMS but are still able to receive calls.

Identification of pre-paid SIM card users is aimed at stemming illegal activities by criminals. Those wishing to register their SIM cards are required to bring their ID cards, passports or alien workers’ cards to all 50,000 network service centers and district registration offices.
