One dead in shootout with drug trafficking gang

Over 200,000 Yaba tablets seized

Members of the Pha Muang Task Force clashed with a group of men smuggling methamphetamine in the forest behind Baan Sankrethong in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai resulting in a shootout that left one of the traffickers dead.

The Deputy Chief said the Task Force joined with Mae Sai Police and authorities to investigate the area on March 10, 2016. After a gun battle police found one suspect dead and and arrested three more. They found 212,012 methamphetamine or Yaba tablets and a loaded 9mm handgun.

Three men were arrested and one killed after being stopped by the Pha Muang Task Force and local police smuggling Yaba into the country.

Col. Chalongchai Chayakham, deputy chief of the Pha Muang Task Force said that the surviving members of the gang revealed that the men had been hired by a big agent to smuggle the drugs into the country. Police believe the drugs came from the Wa Tai gang.
