YALA, 12 June 2015 – Muslims in Yala province were seen busily shopping for dates  ahead of the holy Ramadan month.

Merchants at the railway market in downtown Yala have prepared large quantities of dates to sell ahead of the Ramadan fasting period. The vendors said they were selling at last year’s prices although the wholesale prices they paid had gone up slightly.

Dates are often the first thing Muslims reach for when breaking fast at sundown, before taking water or other food.

Aside from dates, coconut jelly and sweetened jujubes were also favored by locals in Yala Municipality who were stocking up for Ramadan.

This year, fasting will commence either on June 18 or 19 depending on when the moon is spotted.
