BUENG KAN, 23 March 2011 (NNT) – A merit making ceremony has been organized by the Interior Ministry in the northeastern province of Bueng Kan upon its official establishment as Thailand’s 77th province.

Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul presided over the merit making ceremony at the Municipal Office of Bueng Kan, during which civil servants and local residents participated in food offering to 77 Buddhist monks. The celebrants then listened to chanting to mark the opening of the Bueng Kan District Office as a temporary provincial city hall.

Caretaker Governor of Bueng Kan Sompong Arunrojpanya has assumed his duty today while important places in the newborn province are adorned with congratulatory signs. Last night, a celebrative event was also held, featuring 77 sets of fireworks and a countdown to the official founding of Bueng Kan as the 77th province of Thailand at midnight.

Bueng Kan was separated from the northeastern province of Nong Khai on the Thai-Lao border to increase the efficiency of local administration. It comprises eight districts, namely Mueang Bueng Kan, Pak Khat, So Phisai, Phon Charoen, Seka, Bueng Khong Long, Si Wilai and Bung Khla.
