BANGKOK, 3 August 2014  – The Royal Irrigation Department has reported that this year’s water situation is similar to last year and suggested that the total rice production should not exceed 4.7 million Rai.

Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department Lertwirote Kowatthana said this year might have less water than 2013 due to prolonged lack of rain. The general public would be informed of water management by each dam, except four major dams in the Chao Phraya river basin, the official said.

As for rice production, the director-general said the total rice production this year should not be more than last year’s production of 4.7 million Rai. The official added that rice farmers would be urged to grow other crops instead and confirmed there would be no floods crisis like 2011.
