BANGKOK, – The government has prepared for the perennial haze crisis in the North of Thailand.

Government Spokesperson Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that smog countermeasures are now in place, with special attention given to nine northern provinces from January to April. During this time, visibility is expected to be significantly impacted by smog.

Maj Gen Sansern added that the situation often worsens as farmers set fire to their fields to clear out weeds and pave the way for the next crop cycle. Provincial authorities have been told to prevent the haze problem by raising awareness about the environmental impact among residents and encouraging them to cooperate with the government.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha cited the need for every agency involved to work collaboratively and proactively, in an effort to mitigate the haze crisis. He added that preventative efforts also help to conserve water for household consumption, rather than putting out fires.
