BANGKOK, 18 June 2015 – The government has urged the public to practice environmentally-friendly behaviour through a series of green campaigns.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has placed great significance on environmental conservation and encourages people to make use of cloth bags and baskets instead of plastic bags. Department stores and grocery stores are to stop dispensing plastic bags on the 15th of every month.

The government has also launched a green card program as a nationwide pilot project. The privilege card allows people to receive benefits from purchasing products that are eco-friendly in department stores. The move aims to reduce the garbage production, as well as carbon dioxide emissions.

The Prime Minister has asked related agencies to continue organizing activities that instill environmental awareness in younger generations. One such youth-oriented activity is the “Magic Eyes” program by the Thai Environmental and Community Development Association, which aims at creating garbage free communities and school.
