CHIANG MAI, Dec 30 – Lin Hui, a giant panda on loan from China, is due to give birth next month after being artificially inseminated, according to an official announcement by Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand’s North.

Zoo official Rithinarong Kulprasutr said Lin Hui, was inseminated twice with the sperm of her male partner Chuang Chuang on September 28-29.

An ultrasound monitor on Saturday, the 91st day after the insemination, confirmed her pregnancy, due for delivery in mid-next month.

Lin Hui’s baby will be the second cub for the Chiang Mai Zoo. Lin Ping, the first panda born in Thailand in 2009, was returned to China in September to mate naturally.

Mr Rithinarong said officials at the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok and the Panda Centre in China have been informed of the good news.

Chinese specialists will be in Thailand to work closely with Thai veterinarians, he said.
