BANGKOK, 1 March 2016 – – A diving operation has recently been carried out at Pang-Nga province to collect garbage in the waters around Ko Huyong Island, after a large amount of litter was found washed up on its beaches.

The Sea Turtles Conservation Center of the Royal Thai Navy has made an effort to clean up Ko Huyong, which is part of the Mu Ko Similan National Park. In addition the diving operation, the center’s employees have been deployed to remove garbage from the beaches.

The move is also aimed at protecting sea turtles, which visit Ko Huyong each year to lay eggs. The island is off-limits to tourists to allow the animals to breed.

The turtle eggs are collected and hatched by the conservation center before the baby turtles are released into the sea. The Sea Turtles Conservation Center fears the turtles will leave Ko Huyong and lay their eggs elsewhere, should the amount of garbage increase.
