BANGKOK, 1 January 2014 – The Election Commission (EC) has announced that a total of 917 constituency candidates have registered to compete in the general election to be held this February.

According to EC Commissioner Phuchong Nutrawong, 917 people managed to register during December 28 to 30, despite intensifying protests in the South.

Registration was cancelled for a fourth straight day in Phutthalung, Phuket, Songkla, Krabi and a few other southern provinces, as thousands of protesters gathered to obstruct the general election registration. Some EC members also resigned following the prolonged demonstration.

Protesters have kept up their blockades of registration venues, as the deadline for the constituency registration falls on Wednesday.

The Pheu Thai Party is planning to request for an extension of the constituency candidate registration deadline as they have been unable to register due to protests.
