Department of Land Transport expedites installment of GPS on public buses

BANGKOK – The Department of Land Transport is expediting the installment of GPS navigation systems on large trucks and public transport vehicles in order to ensure that drivers adhere to safety regulations.

Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, Sanit Promwong said that in order to ensure road safety, reduce accidents and losses caused by public buses, the department has called for continuous monitoring, maintenance and management of the public bus system.

He revealed that on May 4-10, the department had inspected over 56,000 buses and found malfunctions in 50 vehicles. Of more than 60,000 drivers, 17 had violated traffic regulations. However, the offenses did not involve the use of drugs or alcohol and punishments were issued accordingly.

In addition, the installment of GPS navigation systems on all buses will connect vehicles to the traffic management center in order for officials to monitor the behavior of drivers in order to ensure that drivers adhere to safety regulations.
