BANGKOK, 18 September 2011 -The Ministry of Commerce has allayed consumers’ worry over vegetable supply and prices in face of the ongoing floods, assuring that the staple food is still enough and inexpensive.

Director-General of the Internal Trade Department or ITD, Watcharee Vimuktayon said the ongoing natural disaster would somewhat push up vegetable prices. However, markets will not be short of vegetable supply as most of agricultural areas are spared from floods.

The Internal Trade Department has earlier dispatched officials to inspect major markets to make sure that venders are not taking advantage of the situation to overcharge customers.

The Department will also facilitate transport of vegetables from producers to retailers so that there will be enough supply for consumers at affordable prices.

The ITD admitted that vegetable prices during the vegetarian festival would be a bit higher than normal due to the rise in demand, but would still be lower than the same period last year.
