BETONG, 13 May 2014 – Buddhists in Betong and the Thai-Malaysia border regions have joined in making merit on Visakha Bucha Day despite the strict public security measures.

Visakha Bucha Day is known as the Lord Buddha’s Birthday. In fact it actually commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and even his death at age 82.

On this day, Buddhists distribute gifts in cash and kind to various charitable homes throughout the country. Vesakha is also a time for great joy and happiness, expressed not by pandering to one’s appetites but by concentrating on worthy activities such as decorating and illuminating temples, and painting and creating exquisite scenes from the life of the Buddha for public dissemination.
