NARATHIWAT, March 1 – A bomb in a pickup truck exploded opposite a police station in the violence-plagued province of Narathiwat, but no one was wounded in the incident.

The remote-controlled bomb hidden in a pick-up truck was triggered by a mobile phone and an alarm clock.

According to the initial investigation, the driver of the truck parked in front of a mini mart which is closed on Friday. There were no passers-by in the area when the bomb went off, so no one was wounded in the incident in the provincial seat.

The bombing occurred around noon, hours after a motorcycle bombing at a fresh market elsewhere in the municipality wounded one soldier and five residents Friday morning.

The latest incidents took place only one day after Thailand’s National Security Council secretary general Paradorn Pattanatabutr signed a breakthrough deal with Hassan Taib, the chief of the liaison office of the Barisan Revolusi National (BRN) in Malaysia, agreeing to hold talks to ease nearly a decade of violence in Thailand’s southern border provinces that has killed more than 5,000 people.
