2 Thais win gold medals in 2011 World Taekwondo Competition

BANGKOK, 6 May 2011  – The Thai Taekwondo team led by coach Choi Young Seok has so far grabbed two golds and one silver in the 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships organized at Gyeongju, South Korea from 1 to 6 May 2011. 

On Thursday, the Thai Taekwondo team celebrated a new victory after 2010 Asian Games gold medalist Chatchawal ‘Mag’ Khaola-or beat his rival from South Korea Ji Woong Park in the final match of the male fin weight or below-54 kilogram division by 1-0 points. It was the second gold medal for the team in the competition.

Mr Chatchawal earlier reached the final match with a 7-5 victory over Russia’s Seyfula Magomedov, the champion of the 2008 European Taekwondo Championships.

On the same day, another Thai taekwondo athlete Patiwat Thongsalup could also get the first silver medal for the Thai team from the match. He was defeated by Iranian Alireza Nassrazadany in the men’s -74 kilogram or lightweight final match.

Earlier, 17-year-old Rangsiya ‘June’ Nisaisom from Chon Buri Province created a new milestone for the Thai Taekwondo circle by winning the first gold medal from the international contest in 32 years since the sport has been introduced to the kingdom.

Ms Rangsiya defeated her rival Marina Sumic from Croatia by 3-1 points in the final match of women’s -62 kilogram weight category or lightweight.
