A juvenile dolphin died despite rescue efforts by Pattaya locals who spotted the animal in shallow water.
Animal-control volunteers and marine officials were called to Pattaya Beach around 1 p.m. May 31 where the year-old, meter-long dolphin nearly washed ashore. Rescuers took a speedboat out to the stranded dolphin and took it out to deeper waters, but it could not swim.
Officers tried various methods to support the dolphin for several hours, but it died and was brought back to the Marine Rescue Department for an autopsy.
The animal had cuts under its right fin and experts speculated it had got caught up in fishing nets and was injured when it broke free.
