Phoenix Tuesday/Friday/Sunday Golf Group

This week’s report starts with Sunday 8th Jan 2012 when six of the Phoenix members turned out on a glorious day with not too many on the course.  This made the round more enjoyable because we had the place virtually to ourselves.

Having two three-ball teams we decided to try a new format and we played the best two scores to count for each team.  This means that even if someone is having a bad day they can still contribute right up until the very last hole.

Tuesday’s top three with a staff member from the Relax Bar. Tuesday’s top three with a staff member from the Relax Bar.

After checking the scores, both teams scored the front nine with 44 points (8 under par), however the team of Mike Gerrard, Stuart Gordon and Eamon Murtagh scored another 43 points on the back nine as opposed to the 32 by the team of John Bartley, Patrick Browne and Bill Hewitt.

So this made the winning team 15 under par, a score that anyone would easily win a major tournament.  Problem is that when you try to do it in a major tournament it doesn’t work somehow.

The best individual score was from yours truly (Mike Gerrard) with 41 points, with John Bartley six shots behind on 35 points to claim second place.

Ah well, it was time I had a good score, so it was a two shot voluntary cut to my handicap for the next few days until the PSC review.

Onto Tuesday, January 10, and this day we had a full complement of 7 groups (that’s our limit folks) and once again the weather was absolutely perfect.  We also enjoyed a much faster round than of late due to the course not being so busy.  It was nice for everyone to enjoy being involved in a four-ball team.

Sergio Volpi brought along a guest player to play with him and we discovered that he was a golf teacher.  Thus Sergio won the day with a fine 39 points.  I do not think for one minute that his teacher was instructing him during the competition!!  Sergio is seen in the photograph holding the KPK Food Services voucher as part of his winnings.  Our thanks go to Keith Keohane for his company’s support.

In second place was Stuart Gordon with 38 points, followed closely by Denis Dixon in third place with 37 points.  We decided to go down to six places today and so it was yours truly in fourth place with 36 points, Bob Neylon in fifth with 35 points and Bill Hewitt & Peter Harris joint sixth with 34 points each.

Near pins went to Denis Dixon, Are Hogestor, Angel Matamala & Bill Hewitt.

We also had four lucky draw prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar, with Joe Miller claiming the free massage at the Relax Bar.
