PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Wednesday, June 17, Green Valley – Stableford

One or two doubts were creeping into our minds when we made our way to Green Valley.  The far distant hills were fast disappearing in, what we might call fog, but those of us that have lived here for some time realize that these are rain clouds and sure enough, the heavens opened along the 36.

Mercifully it was only a brief squall and the rain had not reached Green Valley, so off we went somewhat earlier than our scheduled time in what proved to be a perfect day for golf.  What was not quite so perfect was the fact that we caught up to a slow three-ball which caused us some delay.  Why is it that the slow groups are always in front?

The plastic rings in the cups are getting silly here; in fact the greens staff are even bringing them above the level of the surface itself, when they should be 20mm below the level of the green.  The amount of putts lipping out is crazy.  In saying that, the rest of the course is in excellent condition and encouraged some good scores.

Freddie Starbeck outpaced two others on 35 points to take fifth place, one behind Sel Wegner on 36 in fourth.  Jim Bell finished on 39 for third and Steve Balfour took second spot on 40 points.  Top of the charts was occasional visitor to the Billabong, Graham Beaumont, with 41 points, despite having finished with a bogie and double bogie on the last two holes.

There were many excuses about near misses but there were no ‘2’s in the men’s division.

In the ladies flight, Miss Sa stood on the podium again in third place with 33 points while Miss Som Wild was second with 37, losing on a count back to Eng Cotterell, playing off her reduced handicap of 17.

Lot Philp scooped the ‘2’s pool, recording the only one of the day.

Friday, June 19, Burapha – Stableford

We played the A and B loops at Burapha today and the course was in magnificent condition and great value for money.  It was a good day for golf with no rain in sight and not too hot.

We had 6 groups playing and got away a little early.  The scribe was a little unlucky on the 7th hole when he hit the pin with his third shot on the first bounce but it went in and came out and stayed about an inch from the hole.  We also had one player who got two 2’s, both with fantastic chip-ins, although there were two other 2’s coming from Thip and Capt Bob.

The scoring was good with 36 points taking out fourth place for Eng Cotterell.  Third spot went to Rosco Langoulant with a fine 37 points and second to Bobby Driggs with 38.  All were eclipsed by Sakulthip Yanghong (Thip) who returned 39 points for top spot on the podium.

Back at the bar Steve Balfour rang the bell off the chain and it turned out to be a good afternoon’s entertainment.

Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road, looking straight down Lake Mabprachan.  Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game.
