The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society started the new week with visit to Greenwood on Monday, 4th March, to play a stableford event over the B and C nines on a warm humid day.  There was just a single flight and scores were destined to be good on the course where the greens have improved significantly over the last few months.

In third place was the ever consistent New Zealander Alan Flynn who again went under par with a solid round of 38 points.  In second was Dave Plaiter with an excellent 39 points but the round of the day was recorded by Singaporean Larry Ang with 41 fine points representing the eleventh round of forty or more points with the PGS this year to date.  It was a remarkable performance which also saw him record a birdie ‘2’ on B5 with a chip which dented the flagstick!

Other birdies on the same hole saw Barry Horman and Dave Moriarty share the ‘2’s pot with the winner.

Back at Rabbi’s Barry Horman took Rabbi’s free beer draw prize and the Booby Bevy went to Peter Ditz after seeing his 37 point efforts fail to make the podium.  All in all it was a fine way to start the week with the PGS.

Kiwi king at Khao Kheow

A visit to Khao Kheow always warms a golfer’s heart and on Wednesday, 6th March the Pattaya Golf Society took thirty two players to its stableford competition on the B and C nines on the fine course.  With the yellow tees back at their maximum and a strong breeze blowing for most of the round good scores would be at a premium and so it proved.

With the cut at sixteen the second flight saw John Chelo post 30 points for third place with Yvonne Earley, record-breaker last time at the course, finishing in second with 31 points.  The winner was Alan Walker with a competent 33 points.

In the top flight three golfers tied for second with Rick Schramm and Robbie Taylor emulating Martin Grimoldby’s 33 points.  Martin posted the best gross figures of 79.  The flight winner was the ever consistent New Zealander Alan Flynn with 34 points.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Barry Horman with Mr Len taking the Booby Bevy in the absence of Jimmy Cloy for the day’s lowest score.

Khao Kheow is such a joy to play and the group looks forward to the next visit immensely.

Amazing double header

In an amazing week which began with Larry Ang’s 41 point score at Greenwood on Monday, the Pattaya Golf Society closed the week on another high on Friday, 8th March, with a double header at Crystal Bay and Mountain Shadow, because of the former’s inability to cope with the numbers wanting to play at the quality course.

In the main event the chosen track was the A and B nines which were in excellent order and good scores once again were there for those who were on top of their game.

In the top flight, the cut coming at eighteen, Wichai Tananusorn and Dave Moriarty tied for third place with 33 points each, only to be beaten by the two fine rounds of Robbie Taylor and Ken Page on 36 points each.

In the second flight Ken Grimes and Phil McClure shared second place with 33 points but all were outsmarted by a rampant Dave Plaiter who played the best round in his short IPGC career, racking up 42 points for the win.  He also scored the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on A5.

On the sister course John Chelo was taking third place with 33 points, one behind Paul Edgar’s second place finish and Jimmy Cloy was recording a birdie ‘2’ on the eighth hole.

The PGS golfer of the week, Larry Ang was emulating his fine performance at Greenwood on Monday with another forty-plus haul, this time taking the win with 42 points.  And before the whispering begins the Singapore golfer has a long history with the PGS, his and many others’ favourite Pattaya golf group.

Never has there been a week like it and Larry’s score represented the thirteenth winning score of minus four, or better in the 30 competitions so far held this year with the PGS and it took nothing away from the other eleven golfers who have achieved the feat so far.  If any group has a better record they must be damn good!
