The week of the trip the weather had been quite nasty, rain and gusty winds, sometimes times intense, and so I was a little worried how the trip would go.  We arrived to find a beautiful day with calm winds and flat sees.  The skies were overcast which is ideal when fishing the gulf, when the sun is strong it makes for a long day on the water and really beats you up.

The group consisted of Jeff and Karmoon Doutch, John Haddon, Deen and I.  On the trip out we trolled with Jeff’s magic lures, a new color the tackle shop said was all the rage, we didn’t hookup so the jury’s still out.  I think white and red is the ticket but who knows.  The waters were calm and the ride pleasant so it gave us a chance to tell lies and war stories, rig rods and catch up on the last few weeks.

We fished the south side of the last island, a spot where we have done quite well in the past.  I rigged for the larger fish with the heavy rod, but the others went right for the pan size gear.  As usual, I wasn’t having much luck except with catching up on the sleep I didn’t get the night before.  Karmoon went right after them and soon had half a bucket of nice size jacks and pla dang.

Deen had a beautiful new Shimano reel and rod but was having trouble hooking up.  He thought the rod a little too stiff, so he put the new reel on his old fiberglass stick and was soon chasing Karmoon for largest bag.

Jeff, John and I were mostly watching Karmoon and Deen haul in fish when Jeff hooked into a real nice coral trout, about one and a half kilos.  Jeff was soon singing the tune of quality is more important than quantity, one man’s view.  John and I couldn’t argue because we had neither.  Jeff actually ended up catching four nice fish that looked like sisters.

I gave up fishing for large fish about 1 o’clock, and soon had a nice bucket of pan size jacks and pla dang.  John also started getting into them and we all ended up with good catches of fish.  Deen hooked one of the sisters that Jeff missed.  That started the comparing of large fish which Jeff won by a nose.

At the end of the day, we all had a good trip with everyone catching nice bags of fish.  Jeff was the star of the day with the four nice coral trout, good going Jeff.

Deen has planned a mid month trip and will be contacting people this week.  We look forward the regular first Saturday trip (6 August) and hope you can all join us.
