IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The golfers with the Pattaya Golf Society were champing at the bit after a very inactive Songkran week when the group went to Crystal Bay on Monday, 22nd April to play a stableford event in one flight on the C and A nines.  The course was in its usual fine condition and when good golfers meet a good course in a good fettle the cream rises to the top.  Such happened on this day.

Sharing third place were local member Takeshi Hakozaki and PGS stalwart John Mason with 40 points each, the latter’s score being his best for many a long day with the group.  Sharing the top spot were Dave Edwards and Thai lady golfer Orawan Meeraka, both recording personal best scores of 43 points and Dave Edwards in particular recording his lifetime best gross of 75.  Splendid stuff indeed!

The only birdie ‘2’ of the day went to Dave “Mr Twos” Lehane on A8 and the Booby Bevy went to Evan Millar after his 38 points was enough for a handicap cut and nothing more.

Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Paul Edgar and the whole group breathed a collective sigh of relief at the presentation that the excesses of the previous week were over for another year and that only good golf lay ahead for the Pattaya Golf Society.

Ditz hits top gear

On Wednesday, 24th April, the Pattaya Golf Society redirected from a feisty Phoenix who wanted to charge double the high season green fee for the group, an indication that the rumoured new owner, currently exiled, still has “money number one” as his priority.  Instead the PGS visited an empty Khao Kheow, infinitely better value for money, on a day when the course conditions were wonderful on the C and A nines.

An excellent competition ensued with Robbie Taylor, Ken Grimes and Brian Talbot all sharing second place with 32 points each.  Austrian golfer Peter Ditz is coming towards the end of this particular stay and he used the opportunity well to record 34 points for an excellent win.

Near pins had been sponsored by John Mason and Mr. Len and these were won by Larry Ang on A3 and Paul Edgar on A5.

Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Dave Plaiter and the Booby Bevy went to Mark Perrot for his low score of the day.

The good news on the day was the amount raised for the group’s charity this year, the target being the building of a security wall around the Fr Ray Foundation Outreach and Drop In Center on Soi Thepprasit with the total for the year to date reaching almost fifty “klicks”.  Well done everyone, except feisty Phoenix of course.

Taylor made at Emerald

On Friday, 26th April the Pattaya Golf Society visited Emerald to play its monthly medal competition on the course which was in good order except for the greens which were in need of a cut, thus making them slower than normal.

It was good to see the golf geezer, Mr. Len, back on course and he made a solid fist of things for the first time in five months with a net 76 but a tight finish was emerging with Andrew Purdie ending with net 74 for third place.  In second place was Wichai Tananusorn, embracing his new Taylormade R1 driver and using it to good effect with the best gross of the day and a net 73.  The victory was reserved for Robbie Taylor and his net 72 was an excellent performance on the “iffy” greens.

Iain Wilson and Robbie Taylor shared the ‘2’s pot with their efforts on the seventh and fifteenth holes respectively and the Booby Bevy went to Dave Plaiter, newly awarded his Player of the Month award for March, after his “hero-to-zero” performance left him with the second highest score of the day.

Rabbi’s beer draw went to Ken Grimes and the week had ended on a high note with an excellent day’s golf at Emerald.
