Monday, April 13, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Wilf Latham (12) 41pts

2nd Dale Shier (14) 39pts

3rd Stephen Dunn (10) 35pts

Just a small but respectable turnout today for Green Valley as lots of lads prepared for their Songkran (Thai New Year) holidays.  Many blokes get wrangled up to see the village in Issan where the wife/girlfriend comes from and the rest get stuck in the water fights here that are fun for about one day.  Unfortunately they last 6 days so most leave town on a golf trip.

Wilf chose to stay and was rewarded with a brilliant score of 41 points.  Dale’s 39 gave him second place and Stephen Dunn, who is getting his form back, found the last spot on the podium with a 35.

Incidentally, Stephen has just opened “Scooters” bar on Soi Buakhao across from the Bangkok Bank with a Vespa theme.  He has collected loads of Vespa and Lambretta memorabilia and his bar looks great so stop by some time and have a drink.

Tuesday, April 14, Rancho Charnveee (white tees) – Stableford

Day 1 of our Khao Yai Songkran Road Trip to Khao Yai saw the Sandbaggin’ Martin Zimmerman win the day with a mere 37 points.  Johnny “where’s the key?” Emmerson came in second on 36 and Rod Stevens took third with 35, all three players getting a jumpstart on the week that started at the stunning Rancho Charnvee.

So beautiful to see this course in the late afternoon golden light as we were fortunate enough to get a 2 hour delayed start to the departure time.  John forgot to leave the key for us so there we sat until Nat came to the rescue!  Zero traffic saw us here in just 2 hours 35 minutes which is a record.

Steak dinners at Buffalo Bills right next door to the hotel went down a treat as Captain Phil lubricated the table with Johnny Walker.

Wednesday, April 15, Khao Yai G.C. (blue tees) – Stableford

Day 2 saw a visit to Khao Yai Golf Club which offers an amazing setting for this Jack Nicklaus designed track.  The weather was cool and perfect and we virtually had the course to ourselves.

Martin Zimmerman doubled up and won again today, this time with 38 points as Billy Eyles, Rod Stevens and John Emmerson formed the chasing pack just one point in arrears.

Friday, April 17, Rancho Charnvee (white tees) – Stableford

Back to Rancho again on Friday as everybody loves this golf course.  This is really a first class operation and is always in great nick.  I think we all found that the greens were running a bit slow but that was the only comment to the negative we could muster.  We had a bit of a breeze today which was a relief from the warmer than usual weather.

Winner today was Peter LeNoury with a brilliant 40 points – the best round of the tournament – with Canadian Rod Stevens returning a strong 38 points in second and Michael Otterman coming in with a 33-pointer for third place.

We found the new “SmokeHouse” restaurant called Ribsmannn up the 2090 just before the St. Stephens school and it was excellent.  It seats around 500 people and is a very impressive operation we can all recommend.

Saturday, April 18, Panorama (blue tees) – Stableford

Panorama was the venue today for the last round of this year’s comp and all was at stake.  Any one of 6 guys were in the position to win this thing so it was a great test to see who would prevail.

With wins on the first 2 days, Martin Zimmerman could only take third today for the grand finale and with a 4 day total of 127 ended his Songkran bash in style.  Getting 132 points totaled up for the 4 cards, Rod Stevens came up just one shot short as his final day 21 disappointed in the end.  Still, that is a great run and the 22 handicapper has a lot to be proud of.  But winning the final day and with that also the “Man of the Mountain” honours was John Emmerson in first place with a 133 total for the 4 rounds.

Thanks to all who joined us up in Khao Yai for a great time and a fun escape from Songkran for a week.  Thanks also to the Hill Hotel in Pak Chong who provided us with a fantastic home for the 6 nights we were there.  They have the biggest and cleanest pool in town and clean and comfortable new rooms that everyone enjoyed.
