PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Monday, Feb. 17, Eastern Star – Stableford

Monday we welcomed PSC President Tony Oakes and a quality field of 18 other golfers for our trip to the challenging Eastern Star Golf Course.

We managed to depart the GS five minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25 am & headed south down Sukhumvit and after a fairly good run arrived at the course 44 minutes later.  Our allotted tee time was 10.33 am but as the course was not too busy due to several Japanese golfers not showing up we were invited to the first tee early and got our first group away 43 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.50 am.

The weather was hot and there was a fairly stiff breeze, which cooled things down a bit and the golf course was in fairly good shape although some of the fairways were hard and dry, but the greens were in good shape albeit pretty slick at times.  We proceeded at a fairly good pace with the Pres hitting the ball out of sight from the tees and the very enjoyable round of golf was all over in the reasonable time of four hours & ten minutes.

Playing in the first group it was Ebrahim who had the outstanding round of the day and won Division A with a fine 38 points.  The consistent Gerd Riedler finished second with 35 points and PSC President Tony Oakes was third on 32 points.

In Division B it was Rita Zoebelli who got the chocolates and won with a fine 36 points, 3 points ahead of J C Lhoste (18 point back nine) who got second place on a count back from Colm Mullen (17 point back nine) in third spot.

Thursday, Feb. 20, Green Valley – Stableford

We had 37 starters for the very popular Green Valley Golf Club and as we left the GS right on time at 8.30 am the weather was not looking too flash, with drizzling rain that turned quite heavy rain as we arrived at the course 39 minutes later.  It was a hive of activity as there were many golfers just hanging around waiting to see what the weather was going to do and after a wait of about 40 minutes the rain eased a bit so we paid our money and made our way to the first tee.

Our booked tee time was 10.19 am and even after the fairly big delay we managed to get our first group away 1 minute ahead of our scheduled tee time and we proceeded in drizzling rain.  Arriving at the first green we found it very wet and difficult to putt on of course but we managed to somehow get through the puddles without too much drama.

Things did improve dramatically from then on as the rain stopped and the course started to dry out very quickly with the greens just about normal from the third on, although naturally slower than they usually are.  The golf course was of course very good despite the wet and we finished the round in four hours & twenty minutes.

When I saw the scores starting to come in afterwards it was quite apparent that a few golfers had reveled in the conditions as there were some outstanding scores.

Division A was won by Colm Mullen with a fine 41 points and with 2 golfers on 35 points a count back was needed which saw Mike “Hunter” Gosden (18 point back nine) finish second from Big Bill Steinman (17 point back nine) in third place, with Tom McMahon in fourth spot on 33 points.

The best score on the day was recorded by Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei whose 43 points made him the winner in B Division.  Second place went to Silvano Pizzato who had 39 points, 1 point ahead of Rita Zoebelli in third place and Chris Allen was fourth with 34.

Division C was won by Alan “Colonel” Sanders with a fine 37 points and in another count back with two golfers on 34 points it was Nolan “No-one” Wise (15 point back nine) who finished second, with Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper (13 point back nine) in third place and Russell Calcutt was fourth with 29 points.
