Monday, Feb. 8, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

T1st Martin Zimmerman (15) 37pts

T1st Walter Baechli (17) 37pts

3rd Peter LeNoury (12) 36pts

4th Ray Powell (18) 35pts

In the rumour mill… is Sriracha golf course about to re-open?  My sources tell me the old Gary Player layout is under yet another renovation and we will be playing here in just a few months.  Sriracha has been closed for at least 10 years and when I played it way back when, it was a pleasant, if somewhat short, track with amazing facilities.  We shall see, and I will keep you posted.

Kenny Aihara with Darren Boyle and Kenny Grimes.

We had a bit of an unusual winning score out here at Green Valley today, which just goes to show you that you should never give up.

It was a nice day for golf, but probably a bit more of a breeze than we would have liked.  Some people handle it with aplomb and others fall apart.  Me ol’ China Ray Powell did the course justice and turned in a nifty 35 points while steady Peter LeNoury never misses by much and today shot to his handicap with a 36 on the card.

The duel of the day was between the colourful Walter Baechli and Martin Zimmerman and in the end they both walked off the 18th with 37 points to take to the locker room.  The win was shared, as we only do count backs on our Medal comps, which Mr. Baechli must be grateful for.

It seems Mr. Zimmerman had a bit of a rocky start, and could only muster a mere 14 points on the front nine.  I am sure you have already done the math and have calculated that Martin had a hell of a back nine for a 23 point rally in the end!  He never gave up, so very nice going to Martin for today’s big comeback.  Ya just never know with this game!

Wednesday, Feb. 10, The Emerald (white tees) – Stableford

T1st Ken Aihara (6) 38pts

T1st Darren Boyle (23) 38pts

3rd Alan Rothwell (6) 37pts

4th Kenny Grimes (22) 33pts

Dave Ferris is still running our golf show here as Capt. Phil is down under on holiday.  Many thanks to Dave for doing a great job herding those cats and getting them out on time!

Emerald was the venue today and the course was looking pretty good.  It is never in the best of condition, but a great layout and good value always makes this course a good day out.  This is an (allegedly) Nick Faldo and Desmond Muirhead designed golf course that features four excellent and beautiful par-3 holes.

Scoring was good here today as Emerald is usually stingy at giving out stableford points.  Anything in the mid-thirties is a decent job here.

Kenny Grimes had his 22 handicap get him 33 points to start us off the leaderboard count.  It looks like Alan Rothwell is back on form as his 37 was great going on this track.  The tie for the win went to Darren Boyle and stalwart Kenny Aihara who both turned in great cards of 38 to go top of the list of Dave’s little brown envelopes.

Friday, Feb. 12, Pattaya C.C. (white tees) – Stableford

1st Ken Aihara (6) 39pts

2nd Blake Hanna (19) 37pts

3rd Ray Powell (14) 35pts

4th Paul Walsh (15) 34pts

It was a smooth 25 minute drive out to the course today, but the ride back seemed an eternity.  So much for playing a golf course close to town on a Friday!  Such are the perils of high season in Pattaya.

The condition of the course here was pretty good, just that the fairways were a bit dry but the greens were rolling very well.  The new clubhouse is fantastic, which is most appreciated after the round.

34 points gave Englishman Paul Walsh the bottom rung of the leaderboard ladder.  Ray Powell had one better with a 35 for third spot and Blake Hanna finished a strong week with a 37 point round.  But the week belonged to Kenny Aihara with a very nice 39 point showing to collect all those handsome man vouchers today.
