In a sign that high season has arrived, there was a much larger crowd here today and we didn’t get away quite as early as we had expected.  However we still got away on our allotted tee time for what turned out to be a slow round of golf.  A lot of complaints came also after the game about the condition of the course.  Unfortunately, Green Valley is now in by far the worst condition of all the courses we play.

Today we had our most important competition of the year, the Gold Medal.  We had seven of the eleven players who were qualified to play out and Shaun Tracy showed that if you are going to win a competition like this then do it in style.  He not only won the Gold Medal but the Monthly Medal as well with a sparkling net sixty seven, a great score especially with the condition of the course.  Shaun has had a great year at the golf last year with his handicap coming tumbling down and he obviously intends this year to be more of the same.

Michael Williams was only one shot behind to come second in the A Flight with a net sixty eight, another great score.  In third place was Declan Kelly with a net seventy and Jack Fetherston came fourth with a net seventy six.

The scoring wasn’t quite as good in the B Flight, with Frank McGowan winning with a net seventy four.  Evelyn McNamara came second with a net seventy eight, Peter Henshaw got the third place with a net eighty one and Russell Gilroy will probably be ashamed to see his name in the paper for getting fourth with a net eighty two.

Despite having a large group out with some very good scores we had no ‘2’s today.

Thursday, Jan. 12, Bangpra – Stableford

A Flight

1st Mark Kobrin (10) 36pts

2nd Jack Fetherston (13) 36pts

3rd Declan Kelly (11) 34pts

4th Michael Williams (14) 32pts

B Flight

1st Joe McArdle (15) 31pts

2nd Brian Lalor (24) 28pts

3rd Sean Hallahan (23) 26pts

4th Evelyn McNamara (22) 26pts

We had a large group out here today at Bangpra, this despite the fact that when we checked the previous day we were told that it would be carts on the paths only and we had a lot of cancellations.  As it turned out the course was actually dry, even after all the very heavy rain over the previous few days and the carts were allowed everywhere.  In a sign of how business is this year, once again we got teeing off over forty minutes before the time we had booked.

In the B Flight the scoring wasn’t great, with Joe McArdle winning with thirty one points.  Brian Lalor had just arrived from Ireland but he still managed to take the second place with twenty eight points and Sean Hallahan got the third with twenty six, beating Evelyn McNamara on count back.

The scoring was much better in the A Flight with Mark Kobrin winning with thirty six points.  Mark also got the only ‘2’ of the day and as there was a large group out he actually got more for that than he did for winning.  Jack Fetherston also had thirty six but lost the count back to Mark and had to settle for second place.  Declan Kelly had thirty four points and got the third place and Michael Williams came in fourth with thirty two.
