Monday, Dec. 4, Greenwood A & B – Stableford

A Flight

1st Colin Smith (13) 39pts

2nd Peter Wilson (8) 39pts

3rd Alan Humphries (10) 35pts

B Flight

1st Larry Slattery (20) 37pts

2nd Alan Walker (27) 33pts

3rd Tim Shaw (23) 32pts

Colin Smith returned to take top prize today, but not by much.  Peter Wilson ran him to a count-back, just missing out on yet another green jacket, both notching up 39 points.  Alan Humphries filled third place in A flight with a well played 35 points.

In the B flight, Larry Slattery, after a couple of quiet games, came roaring back to the top with a fine 37 points to beat the, seemingly, ever-present Alan Walker in second with 33.  Tim Shaw has made his presence felt in the short time he has been here and once again figured in the results, finishing third with 32 points.

We had near pin markers on each of the Par 3s and this time, all were won.  Peter Wilson nabbed A2 and B6, Ken Page A6 and Selwyn Yates B2.

The consolation best nines from none winners came from Steve Truelove (front, 18pts) and Bob Watson (back, 19pts).

pernell (16) 39pts

3rd Len Jones (30) 36pts

What makes golf so special is the equity provided by the handicap system, allowing high as well as low markers to compete together in the same conditions and this was evident on the day as it took a count-back to decide third place between the high marker in the field with one of the low markers, as Len Jones enjoyed his 36 point round, giving him third place at the expense of Mick Alleyne.

Aussie Wayne Peppernell returned to Pattaya to take second place with 39 points whilst compatriot Stu Thompson played a fine round finishing with 40 points for his second win from the last three comps with the PLGS.  It marked his best round since returning to the game after his accident a couple of years ago.

For non winners there was the consolation of being in the hat for the best nines and Niels Peter registered the best front nine with 17 points whilst the Scottish giant Michael McGuigan belted out 21 points for the back nine.

After just one scratching on the morning, we set off in buses and cars with 41 golfers ready to tackle this great course.

Having so many players, it was decided to run with 3 flights 0-13, 14-21, 22+ and the best score of the day came from the C flight when Rod Stevens, who has been eying off the green jacket for some time, finally had his big day out with an impressive 41 points.

In the same flight, a long way behind, came Merle Humphreys on 32 points while John Mason was next with 31 and Len Jones won the fourth spot on count-back with 30 points.

Larry Slattery once again showed up with 39 points to take out B flight.  Niall Caven, just returned to Pattaya, scored 38 points first up and John Hughes took third with 37.  Nick Odnoral rounded out the four podium places on 34 points.

The lower handicappers also did well in A flight.  Maurice Roberts returned a nice tally of 35 points to just beat Paul Smith, who scored 34 points from his #1 handicap.  Barry Wellings and Kevin McEntee went to a count-back on 32 points, with Barry getting the nod.

Near pins went to Paul Smith (2), Gerner Lykke, Larry Gibbs and Niall Caven while the consolation best nine scores came from John Edwards (front, 18pts) and Alan Humphries (beck, 18pts)
