Another day dawned and just under 120 golfers, including 12 ladies, descended on the Phoenix Gold Golf Club for the April PAGS tournament on Tuesday 26th.  The Mountain & Lakes nines were the allotted combination for the day’s field of keen, but apprehensive players.

Weather conditions were oppressive, with just a light breeze to alleviate the heat, so the offer of free carts organised by Shane was a welcome attraction for the PAGS.

Player of the day Tom Thompson (centre) collects his prize.

Tom Thompson (H/cap 16) was the undoubted star of the day, winning the B Flight with a fine 39 points to go along with the maximum 2 technical prizes, after writing his name on another one which went in to the lucky draws for the evening.  Other notables on the day, with at least 2 technical prizes, were Anders Pederson who contributed a third to the lucky draws, and Matthew Sneath.

The Ladies winner was Somchith (H/cap 36) with a solid 35 points while the minor placing was won by Mon (13) with 34 points.

Kenny Chung (26) was the winner of the C flight for handicaps 20+ with a day’s best 42 points, edging John Duffy (25) into second with his 40 points, while Bob Lakey (28) picked up third spot with 39.

Ladies champion Somchith (centre) won a new pair of shoes.

The B Flight winner has already been mentioned but the minor placings for handicaps 15–19 saw another tightly contested but orderly affair, with Philippe Pruvot (18) getting the nod over Mike Johns (16) after the count back went to the last 6 holes 11/10, with both players signing for 36 points.

The A Flight for handicaps 0–14 saw Jerry Sweetham (12) a clear winner on 37 points, to go with his Seniors’ long drive.  Again minor placings required a count back, with Gerd Riedler (6) edging Jeff Wylie (7) 17/16 on the back 9 after both had solid, but unspectacular scores of 35 points.

A Flight winner Jerry Sweetham took home a prize golf bag.

Dave and his team were once again doing a sterling job in the tucker department, with plenty of fine fare to be enjoyed on the evening.  As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from a PAGS presentation.  I am confident we will all look forward to the next event at Phoenix Gold on May 31.  Contact Shane on 085 945 9689 to ensure your preferred tee time.
