Travellers Rest Golf Group

A beautiful week weather wise with ideal temperatures and a cooling breeze, fantastic conditions for playing golf, just another week in paradise.  All right, on Wednesday it bucketed down for a couple of hours but besides that it was wall to wall sunshine and I should guess that the world’s lady golfers competing in the Honda LPGA tournament at Siam Country Club, which is just down the road, must have been in their element.

Certainly the TRGG golfers enjoyed the conditions and there was some excellent scoring from a number of our guys and I hasten to add not from those with dodgy handicaps.  They all seem to have disappeared elsewhere thank goodness.

Monday, Feb. 22, Pattana – Stableford

It was off to pastures new on Monday and it is good to see that Pattana is back on the agenda.  It was B and C courses providing the test on the day and some test it turned out to be, with nobody in the two divisions bettering their handicap.

Alan Thomas winner at Pattana.

In Division 1 it was one of our best and most consistent golfers who returned to the No. 1 slot.  As they say cream always rises to the top and Alan Thomas is the cream of the crop.  His 35 points proved too good for the rest and it was only Steve Carleton in second place on 32 points who put up anything like a challenge to the maestro.  Jovial Joe Stranks made it into third place with his 30-pointer.

In Division 2 it was 30 points that won the day, so well done Suresh Mehta.  Close behind came Ted Senior and John Flannery who could only be separated after a count back as they both finished with 29 points.

Div.1 (0-13)

1st Alan Thomas (5) 35pts

2nd Steve Carleton (9) 32pts

3rd Joe Stranks (12) 30pts

Div.2 (14+)

1st Suresh Mehta (19) 30pts

2nd Ted Senior (14) 29pts

3rd John Flannery (15) 29pts

Tuesday, Feb. 23, Burapha – Stableford

It being a Tuesday it meant it was our usual jaunt over to Burapha (A and B courses) and again for the third week running playing numbers were down so only one division was necessary.

Nick Thomas winner at Green Valley.

It was chunky Andy Halsey who this week made the headway and it was his 40 points that took him over the line into first place.  Old Father Time Fergus Brennan took second place with a very respectable 36 points and Monday’s hero Alan Thomas slotted into third.

1st Andy Halsey (8) 40pts

2nd Fergus Brennan (12) 36pts

3rd Alan Thomas (5) 35pts

Wednesday, Feb. 24, The Emerald – Stableford

At Emerald on Wednesday the rain in the area had no adverse effect on the golf luckily as it was pretty heavy in some places.

In Division 1 it was Alan Gibb, who has only managed a couple of mentions in dispatches over the last couple of months, who finally came good today.  He finished top of the pile with 35 points and just a point behind came Paul Baylis and a further point back was Jack Watkins in third place.

In Division 2 it was the big Irishman Seamus Farrell who again cleared up and his massive 40 points should see him suffer another handicap cut.  So hopefully no more paying out to him for a while in the sixes, I hope.  Gary Bennett took second place and Reg Glass made it into third place.

Div.1 (0-14)

1st Alan Gibb (8) 35pts

2nd Paul Bayliss (10) 34pts

3rd Jack Watkins (9) 33pts

Div.2 (15+)

1st Seamus Farrell (24) 40pts

2nd Gary Bennett (17) 38pts

3rd Reg Glass (17) 37pts

Thursday, Deb. 25, Green Valley – Stableford

On Thursday the TRGG headed back to Green Valley once again and just for once the playing numbers dropped off and only one division was needed on the day.

Nick Thomas (not Alan) kept the Thomas name in the lead and he rattled up a very impressive 42 points, which he has been promising to do for a while with some pretty impressive golf.  His handicap has been heading in a southerly direction for the last couple of months and after this I should guess he will nearly be in single figures.

Dave Palmer winner at Pattavia Century.

Joe Nagle finished some way behind in second place but still managed a very respectable 37 points.  Peter McGinty shot his handicap to finish in third place.

1st Nick Thomas (11) 42pts

2nd Joe Nagle (15) 37pts

3rd Peter McGinty (20) 36pts

Friday, Feb. 26, Pattavia – Stableford

We rounded off the golfing week on Friday with a well-attended visit to Pattavia Century.

In Division 1 it was Dave Palmer who once again got his name into print by amassing a very impressive 38 points round a course where the greens were back to their slippery best, boy were they tough on the day.  Fergus Brennan also had a good day and finished in second place and Paul Bayliss came in third.

In Division 2 Jack Mooney registered a first place finish for the second week running and played very well and he took all my money in the sixes.  Roger Wilkinson, also in our four-ball, was second and John Baxter had a good day and finished in third place.

Div. 1 (0-12)

1st Dave Palmer (8) 38pts

2nd Fergus Brennan (12) 35pts

3rd Paul Bayliss (10) 34pts

Div. 2 (13+)

1st Jack Mooney (22) 37pts

2nd Roger Wilkinson (14) 35pts

3rd John Baxter (14) 34pts
