IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at The Links Bar

On Monday, 16th May the Pattaya Golf Society guaranteed playing off grass with a trip to the sumptuous course at Pattana to play a stableford competition off the yellow tees on the B and C nines.  The course was in excellent condition and the greens were quick enough to pose challenges, with the pin positions in tough places.

Scores were generally good with the top three golfers all breaking par.  In third place was Gary Bolger with 37 points, merely a point behind fellow Aussie Mike Firkin who put together his best round this trip with 38 points.  The winner was Japanese golfer Yasuo Suzuki who found his game well appointed and he produced an excellent round of 39 points.

Fellow Japanese golfer Masaaki Sugaya recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day with an assured fifteen footer on B3.  Elsewhere the wheels came off the boss’s wagon on the back nine as Mr Len’s promising front nine disappeared with far too many putts and his reward was his own Booby Bevy.

Everything about the course is “quality”, from the warm welcome on arrival to the courtesy of the marshalls and the efficiency of the caddies and the whole day could only be described in the best possible terms.  Well done Pattana!  It represents a lesson many other local courses could learn.

Another win for Firkin

Heavy rain in Pattaya on Wednesday, 18th May saw the Pattaya Golf Society golfers leave for the calmer waters of Pattavia to play a stableford competition on the well turned out course.  Heavy overnight rain had soaked and softened the greens and the first few greens were a joy to putt on… then they dried and became as tough as always again before the turn.

Results saw Murray Edwards and John O’Sullivan share runner-up place with 34 points whilst Mike Firkin kicked into rescue golf mode again to rack up another fine total, this time 37 points, following his 38 on Monday.

Mike, along with Seil Pete, Masa Takano and Mr Len also generously sponsored near pins and these were won by John Mason, Masaaki Sugaya and Mike Wilsher (2).  There was only one ‘2’ recorded, with Masaaki repeating Monday’s effort with a birdie on the tough hole number 7.

The Booby Bevy went to the organiser for leaving the bar with the club captain stranded without transport but the obliging John O’Sullivan did the good deed.

The day ended with a fine presentation buffet in honour of Mr Russell’s birthday and all the staff who contributed to the success of the day are also to be congratulated.  Well done one and all.
