PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, July 4, Burapha – Stableford

It was a pleasure to play the C and D loops for a change today, most of the 30 Outbackers appreciating playing off the shorter white tees.  USGA rated a relatively easy course, the new handicap system gave little back to the low to mid markers, with Simon Spaulding and Paul Smith both having to play off plus handicaps.

The weather was good for golf with just a little cloud and a nice breeze to keep the temperature down but apart from three scores in Div A and one from Div B, nobody took advantage of the benign conditions, although the average scoring was generally good.

Crystal Bay podium placers (from left): John Low, Joe Mooneyham and Dion Lane. Crystal Bay podium placers (from left): John Low, Joe Mooneyham and Dion Lane.

There was another “Roo Cup” challenge today and once again an all Kiwi affair that went right down to the wire eventually being won by Capt’ Bob and Lloyd Shuttleworth on the 17th.  Their opponents, who included the Div A winner, John Low (40pts) put up a spirited battle but the Capt’s 32 points and Lloyd’s 31 points, “ham and egged” too well.

Owen Walkley was up there again in second with 39 and welcome back to Mick Morrison who took third with 38.  Ray Verrall (39pts) was the runaway winner of Div B by a margin of six, over Ivan Plunkett (33) and Bob Lindborg (30).

There were three ‘2’s: on Hole 5, Lloyd Shuttleworth; Hole 11, Ivan Plunkett and on Hole 17, Steve Rawlings.

Tuesday, July 5, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

Wednesday, July 6, Crystal Bay – Stableford

22 Outbackers at Crystal Bay today playing the B & C nines from the white tees, rated at 70.4 with a slope of 123, a relatively straightforward course, with the single figure handicappers losing a shot against most of the field.

The course was in good condition as were the greens, albeit that they were a bit slow, and the weather was pleasant with a light breeze, all of which had the day set fair for some excellent scoring.

Div A obliged with four guys tied at the top, all with 37 points, divided only by count-back but John Low’s stunning back nine of 22 points clinched first place for him ahead of Bernie Stafford’s 20 points with Dion and Mick only being separated by the last three holes, with 6 points and 5 points respectively.

1st John Low (11/Hi11.3) 37pts

2nd Bernie Stafford (12/Hi12.4) 37pts

Friday, July 8, Khao Kheow – Stableford

So with the correct application of the handicap index, the playing handicap at Khao Kheow has increased for most, producing a much better set of scores, with no less than five players hitting the top score of the day of 39 points.

A great turnout of 33 Outbackers playing the B & C nines on this great course, which represents excellent value for money as well as a stern test of golf.

The “Golf Club” organiser, Brad Sproxton headed Div A on 39 and with a fantastic back nine of 22, to beat Erik Antonnen also with 39 and a back nine of 20.  Back in third, was the ever consistent Gary Hogg (37pts) who with playing partner ‘Cottee’ (Wayne Cotterell), gave Capt’ Bob & Lloyd Shuttleworth a little touch up in the “Roo Cup”, to return the “Roo” to the “Aussie” camp, with a 5 & 4 thrashing.

Rogan Hampson had to wait until it’s nearly time to return to New Zealand, before notching up his first win (in Div B) on this year’s tour, also with a fine 39 points, beating regular Outbacker, Bob Lindborg on count-back with an amazing 25 points to Bob’s 20, with another “Golf Club” visitor, Peter Hynard, taking third place with his 17 points on the back.

There were six ‘2’s:- three on hole B8 from John Cogan, Dion Lane & Steve Rawlings, one on C3 from Lloyd Shuttleworth and two more on C8 from Rogan Hampson & Simon Spaulding.
