Monday, November 7, Green Valley – Stableford

This was our first visit here for some considerable time for various reasons and we returned with eleven groups out today.

We teed off over the water on the first and after all the rain we have had recently we were amazed how much run the ball was getting on a slightly uphill fairway.

There were three men’s divisions today with the cut at 4-12, 13-19 and 20 plus and 39 points was the best score in winning division 2 for Neville Scurrell.  Andy Baber took second with 37 and Dennis Scougal was third after beating Mike Lewis and Bryan Rought on an 18/15/13 back-nine count back.

Marty Rock (center) after scoring 44 points poses with Ket and Popeye at Siam Cats. Marty Rock (center) after scoring 44 points poses with Ket and Popeye at Siam Cats.

The Swedish boy Mikael Andersson topped division 1 with 38 points, beating the Finish boy Kari Kuparinen by one shot and the Estonian lad Raivo Velsberg was third on 33 after beating Sassa on a 17/16 count back.

Ian Hart won division 3 with 35 points, beating Terry Redding on a 7/6 back three count back and in third place was Burnie Sinclair with 34.

Near pins went to Martin McAteer, Sassa, Raivo Velsberg, Chris Voller, Jim Connolly, Mike Lewis and Bo Singleton.

In the ‘2’s there was one rollover in division 1 and Sassa was the only winner with a birdie on the 16th.  Andy Baber birdied the 12th to claim the rollover pot in division 2.

Wednesday, November 9, The Emerald – Stableford

After Monday’s game we expected similar conditions here but in places it was still a little spongy but with carts allowed on the fairway there was no ‘lift clean and place’ today.

There were 36 out today so three divisions with the cut at 4-12, 13-20 and 21+.

Tony Thorne returned with 42 points to win division 1, beating Chris Voller who finished with 39 for second and in third place was Marty Rock on 37.

Count back Burnie’s 39 points proved to be unbeatable in division 2 as he finished ahead of Martin McAteer by one point and Mike Missler came in third after beating Mike Lewis on a 14/12 back six count back, both on 35 points.

Bryan Priestley’s 38 points won division 3 with Paul Chabot in second place with 36 and Leo in third place on 33.

Near pins went to Reijo (2), Sami, Tony Thorne, Bernd Floethner, Yom Novak and Ponti while ‘2’ were recorded by Peter Pedder, Raivo Velsberg, Sami, Tony Thorne, Chris Voller and William Chang.

It was the Oz boy Terry Redding’s 65th birthday today so we met at the En Zed bar near the market here in Jomtien where all the drinks were provided by the birthday boy, and a few nibbles were hosted by the bar as well.  Many thanks to Terry from all of us at Jomtien Golf!

Friday, November 11, Eastern Star – Stableford

One week on and the course had improved considerably; the eighth hole, which had been a quagmire for many weeks, had completely dried out and surprised many people and while there were still a few sodden areas around the course the majority of players were all pleased.

It was pleasant conditions all round today and we had 6 ladies and 38 men out in three divisions with the cut at 4-14, 15-18 and 19 plus.

Playing off an 11 handicap Marty Rock had a two over par gross score on the front nine and a gross 38 on the back nine to come in and win division 1 with a remarkable 44 points.  Bill Bertram was second on 35 and Mikael Andersson took third one point behind Bill.  A great round Marty and well done!

The Irish boy Cully Monks was back in the headlines again after winning division 2 with 38 points, Mike Missler was three points behind and Jim Connolly claimed third with 34 after beating Andy Baber on a 21/17 back nine count back.

Another 38 points won Bryan Priestley podium position in division 3with Jim Lane second on 35 and Brian Blackford beat John Helm for third on an 18/16 back nine count back after they both scored 33 points.

Miss Nut captured the ladies division with 35 points, beating Anothai Van Zeeland on a 21/16 back nine count back.  A good return for Miss Nut!

Near pins went to Josie Monks, Nut Ponvipa, Anothai Van Zeeland, Arthur Hancock, Olli, Sassa, Timo, Eric Reginiussen (2) and Reijo.

In the ‘2’s there were two rollovers in the Eastern Star pot and Sassa had a birdie on the 17th, his second this week, to share the purse with Don Head who birdies the 6th hole.  Reijo got a ‘2’ on the 3rd for the only win in division 2.

Our 5th annual Club Championship gets under way next week with two 18 hole rounds at Eastern Star on Wednesday and Friday, an individual four divisional game each day and an overall competition over the two days.
