Sunday, Feb. 12, Green Valley – Stableford

It was time for our second monthly medal for 2017, once again held at Green Valley.  There was a good turnout to compete on a beautiful day for golf with a nice breeze to keep it cool.

Joe Peters (H/cap 22) won his second medal with the best score of the day and he was also a runaway winner of the B flight with a net 69.  Ger Lodge (20) was a distant seven shots behind but still got the second place with a net 76..  We then had two players on net 77 with Terry Mangan (21) winning the count back to take third place and Glen Eldershaw (19) having to settle for fourth.

In the A flight we had two players on a net 71 with Joe McArdle (15) winning the count back to take the top spot and Kevin Blake (7) edged into second place.  Paddy Naughton (17) was again very steady and got the third place with a net 72 while Nick Caulfield (6) took the fourth and last place with a net 74.

Francis McGuigan and Kevin Blake recorded the only ‘2’s of the day.

Tuesday, Feb. 14, Treasure Hill – Stableford

Back at Treasure Hill today with our friends from the PFGS and we had a large group out despite the fact that a lot of our usual members took the day off to spend a romantic Valentine’s Day with their wives or girlfriends.

As everyone knows, this is the most difficult course we play but today two of our members made it look easy.  Joe Peters is really on a roll at the moment and after winning the monthly medal on Sunday he went on again today to win the B flight today with a similar score of 39 points, which is also going to see him getting a sharp reduction in his handicap.  Ted Murphy (25) played his best round of the year so far and probably thought he had won with his 38 points but unfortunately for him it was only good enough for second place.  Glen Eldershaw was playing his last game with us for this trip and he didn’t go home empty handed as he came third with 33 points, Bernie Van Zyl (21) got fourth with 28 and Paddy Naughton placed fifth place with 27.

In the A flight the scoring wasn’t quite as good and Nick Caulfield came out the winner here with 34 points.  Joe McArdle took second place with 32 after beating his friend and playing partner Francis McGuigan (14) into third place on the count back.  Liam Hyland (8) was also playing his last game for this trip and he didn’t go home empty handed either as he got the fourth place with 31 points and also had a ‘2’.  Barney Sheedy (12) also had 31 points but lost the count back to Liam and had to settle for fifth place.

Kevin Blake and Bernie Stafford also recorded ‘2’s along with Liam.

Thursday, Feb. 16, Pattavia – Stableford

We were back at Pattavia today, another course we hadn’t played in a long time and after the reaction and all the complaints we got from our friends it will probably be another long time before we go back again.  The course itself was in very good condition but most of us found that the greens and pin placements were almost impossible and very frustrating, with some people playing good golf but coming in with very bad scores due to three and sometimes four putting.  Unusually for such fast greens though, we still had five golfers managing to get a ‘2’.

We had only one player who managed to play to his handicap, that was Paddy Naughton who won the A flight with 36 points.  Barney Sheedy was a distant five points behind but he still got the second place with 31.  We then had three players on twenty nine points and on the count back Craig Hitchens (14) came second, Russell Gilroy (18) fourth and Gerry Hannan (11) fifth.

In the B flight we had two players on 34 points, with Sean Hallahan (24) coming out on top to win and Ted Murphy (25) having to settle for second.  We then had two players on 33 and Michael Byrne, who had just arrived and was playing his first game for this trip, won the count back to get the third place leaving Joe Peters in fourth.  The fifth place went to Gerry Doyle (25) who had 32 points.

Joe McArdle, John Connolly, Dympna Burke, Paddy Naughton and Craig Hitchens each had a ‘2’ on their card.
