PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, July 22, Burapha – Stableford

Although a Public Holiday, a great field of 47 Outbackers played Burapha A and B from the white tees, for a change.  The course as usual was in top condition and the weather perfect and all groups finished under four hours.  Quite surprisingly the scores were much the same as from the usual blues at the top end of the range but there was far greater consolidation of scores in the low thirties.

We had three divisions down to fifth with Div A being largely a Kiwi affair, won by Kiwi John Low (38) from Scot Alex Graham (37), with Aussie Sel Wegner taking third on 36.  John’s two partners in crime, Gil Mohi and Dion Lane, picked up the last two podium spots.

Stephen Blazsanyik recorded the best score of the day with 39pts from Rosco (37) and Paul Cain (35) having his last game before going home.  Mark Kembrey improved dramatically from his poor showing at St Andrews on Friday, to take Div C with 38pts, four shots clear of Mike Quill on 34.

There were an abundance of ‘2’s, as a result of the shorter tees – ten to be precise, from Gilvrey Mohi & Bob Finley (A3), Stephen Blazsanyik, Stephen Mann & Tim Knight (B3), Rosco Langoulant (B8) and both Alex Graham A6 & B8 and John Cunningham B3 & B8 got two each.

Back at the Outback, as it was a no alcohol day, many of the customers sampled the new fruit smoothies launched today at the bar.

Wednesday, July 24, Pattana – Stableford

We had no golf Tuesday at Phoenix because of the holiday rates and the holiday mood rolled over to today, with only 6 players at Pattana on the A & B nines, with John O’Keefe taking the win with 35pts from Steve Durey on 34 and there were no ‘2’s.

But the news of the day was that Jack had secured the venue for the “Race2Bkk” final as Lotus Valley on Wednesday 2nd Oct.  The top 24 players available will have their point score for the year reset to zero and play an 18-hole stroke-play tournament for a first prize of 20,000 baht.

Friday, July 26, Green Valley – Monthly Medal

The fine field of 35 players for Monthly Medal, sponsored by Greg Hirst of the DeVere Financial Group, produced some excellent scoring on a pleasant but breezy day here at Green Valley.

Andy Makara explains to John Player just how big it was.Andy Makara explains to John Player just how big it was.

The course was generally in good condition apart from the obstacle course we were left with down the side of the sixth hole with all the recently felled trees making it extremely difficult to find one’s ball after a wayward shot, particularly necessary in stroke-play.  There was also some GUR around the bunkers on the eighteenth, which had little or no effect on the field as most players were unable to reach them (the bunkers) with their drive.

As is often the case we had a few ‘if only’ stories and Sugar’s comes to mind, going out in 41 gross, three under his handicap only to lose his way on the easier back nine, to return in 51!  But not so for Joe Mooneyham, who, after a double-bogey on the first, recovered to complete the front nine in 40 (four under his handicap) to return in 42 for a net 67 total; to win the day by two from Jim Brackett.  Suzi got the better of this course at last to take third with a net 70, beating both Dion Lane and Dennis Pelly on count back.

Jim (77) just missed out on the low gross, which went to Ian Heddle with 76.

There were three ‘2’s from Jim Brackett (4th) and John Stafford & Peter LeNoury both on the 12th.

1st Joe Mooneyham (15) net 67

2nd Jim Brackett (8) net 69

3rd Suzi Lawton (22) net 70

4th Dion Lane (12) net 70

5th Dennis Pelly (11) net 70

6th Peter LeNoury (9) net 71

7th Steve Milne (13) net 72

Saturday, July 27, Green Valley – Stableford

Murray Hart couldn’t get his flights to match up in time to play in Friday’s medal, returning from his tour of Chile, but he was able to join the six other players today, who made up this Saturday outing.  Welcome back to Mark Gagliardi, who when opening his golf bag this morning, discovered a mysteriously broken driver shaft, which wouldn’t have helped much towards his 17 points, sorry Mark!  He went off to fix that later in the day and will surely bounce back on Monday.

Welcome also to Craig Blacklock (aka Blackie), not only known for his pool table skills but can also play golf as well, with 35pts today off a handicap of 9 to win the day.

1st Craig Blacklock (9) 34pts

2nd Tim Knight (22) 29pts

3rd Greg Hirst (25) 28pts
