Sunday, Nov. 22, Green Valley – Stableford

A Flight

1st JP Maffray (12) 42pts

2nd Nick Shaw (16) 39pts

3rd Pat Regan (15) 39pts

B Flight

1st Jim Bell (19) 42pts

2nd Bob Fagan (25) 40pts

3rd Barry Tregurtha (21) 38pts

JP Maffray and Jimmy ‘AK47’ Bell were co-men of the match in A and B flights respectively as they posted joint best scores on the day of 42 points.  Jimmy was followed in the junior flight by the big American Bob Fagan with an excellent 40 points while Barry Tregurtha completed the podium with a very creditable 38.

JP Maffray.

In the premier flight, JP was three strokes clear of Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw and Pat ‘the Irish rover’ Regan; it was no surprise that Nick was able to calculate a winning count back.

Jimmy ‘AK47’ should probably have won the game outright as he had a very cunning 18-inch putt on the 18th hole which he let slip by the hole.

Monday, Nov. 23, Treasure Hill – Stableford

A Flight

1st Gerry Cooney (16) 35pts

2nd Andrew Byrne (11) 35pts

3rd Dominic Downey (12) 34pts

B Flight

1st Brendan Dolan (19) 36pts

2nd Merle Humphreys (18) 32pts

3rd Dominic Moss (22) 31pts

Set among the hills some 55 kilometers from Pattaya, Treasure Hill is a little gem of a course.  Fairly long off the yellow tees, it’s very tough, requires sharp and accurate iron play and is always in the best condition with some of the best tee areas and greens. And at a fantastic price of 1050 baht including cart and caddie fee it is a must play.

The weather was hot and humid on this day with a slight breeze, which made it a pleasure to play.

Jim Bell (left) with Peter Henshaw.

The course was the winner as no player managed to better their handicap, but B Flight’s Brendon Dolan did manage to play to par for the man of the match honours.  Brendon was followed at a distance by Merle Humphreys with 32 points as Dominic Moss closed the flight a further shot back.

The top spot in A Flight, or should I say the Irish Flight, was filled by Gerry Cooney but first he had to win a count back over Co. Offaly gang man Andrew Byrne.  Dominic Downey rounded out the flight a stroke in arrears.

Wednesday, Nov. 25, Pattana – Stableford

A Flight

1st Dominic Downey (12) 34pts

2nd Roger Emery (12) 34pts

3rd Ed Wyckoff (13) 34pts

B Flight

1st Chris Martin (14) 39pts

2nd Tom Gorey (15) 34pts

3rd Reg McKay (14) 33pts

Pattana, another course in great condition with its par sixes and very challenging greens is always a good test of golf, as the scores on this day might indicate.

B Flight’s Chris Martin was the only player to better his handicap on the day for the man of the match honours with a splendid 39 points.  Chris was five strokes clear of Co. Killkeny’s favourite son Tom Gorey.  Scotland’s Buckie boy Reg McKay, who can certainly hit the ball, calmed down the rest of his game to edge the friend of many, Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick, to sort out the flight bronze.

The man riding a purple patch, Irishman Dominic Downey, shot well on the course but was even stronger in the A Flight count back as three players all returned 34 points.  Roger Emery, unaccustomed to taking a back seat on this course had to settle for the second spot, with Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff getting the short stick.
