The Tropical Golf Group

Tuesday, Oct. 3, Khao Kheow – Stableford

The test for the day was to be the C & B nines in that order and we were told that there were no carts allowed on the course due to recent rain.

It was bright and sunny as we started on C1 but after 5 holes the sun went in and it started to rain.  Then the storm hit and our other groups joined us in the rest stop as the rain hammered down, and the wind blew.  One hour later the rain slowed but the greens had rivers of water on them.

After another 20 minutes we continued and finished the round, after all we had paid our green fee, however continued to rain and some bunkers were ponds with no sand showing, and the greens were very wet.

The scores were not something to shout about, but in the terrible conditions just to finish was a result.  The winner with 31 points was John Davis ahead of a count-back on 30 points that saw John Bland in second and Arne Jorgenson take third.  A count-back on 28 points placed Takeshi Hakozaki in fourth ahead of Brian Parish who just missed out.

The best score on the front-nine for non-winners was 14 points from Ronnie Ratte and on the back-nine Brian Parish’s 18 points.

Treasure Hill – Stableford

This Friday the Tropical golfers made a trip to Treasure Hill.  Other golf groups have recently complained about this course sending out groups of five or six without regard to reservations or how it might affect play.  This time it was the Tropical Golfers who bumped into a 6-ball on the back nine but we were a bit “lucky” as it happened on the last few holes, although with darkening clouds and thunder in the area it put everyone on edge.

After a long absence, Tom Herrington (c/h 18) found himself in the winner’s circle in A-Flight (0-18) with 37 points, five shots clear of his closest pursuer and he was the only one to beat handicap this day.  Next came John Davis (15) with 32 points, and Steve Truelove (11) was probably surprised to hear his name called with 30 points. A tough day!

Dick Warberg (19) continued his fine form and winning ways with 36 points in the B-Flight (19+). Next came Mick Coghlan (25) with 34 points, and Brian Gabe (21) squeezed into the final spot with 31.

Best nines (non winners) came from Anders Pederson and Nigel Perry.
