The GIS Storm Varsity team, blue shirts, in action at the ESAC Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament held at Regents School, Saturday, April 2.
Mark Hemi and Ben Mayley each added seven points while Rain Lee and Air Chaiyagunkit scored six points apiece off the bench.
Martin Turner would chip in two points to round out the scoring.
With the win, their 13th of the season, GIS broke their previous mark of 12 set in 2007/08. …The 61 points scored and 52 point margin of victory were also new team records. …GIS would shoot 63% from the field, by far, their best shooting performance of the year.
After cruising through their semi final contest against ISE, the Storm would not be denied in the Championship game later in the day.
Nic Neufeld took control of a fairly close game early in the fourth quarter to lead GIS to a 52-30 victory over Regents. In his best overall game of the year, Nic would score a career high 37 points to lead all scorers. He would shoot 13-of-22 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line, but it was his leadership at the defensive end of the court that was most impressive.
Thomas Cercleron dished out numerous assists to go along with his nine points while Ben Mayley would score four points and Mark Hemi would add two points.
GIS would lead 13-4 after one quarter, 24-13 at the half and 32-22 through three quarters.
Regents would cut the lead to eight points in the third quarter but that would be as close as they would get.
Even though GIS were out rebounded by the taller Regent’s players, their overall team defence was outstanding. They prevented the ball from getting inside to the Regents big players and forced them into some sloppy turnovers which led to some easy fast break baskets.
The ESAC Championship concluded another winning season for the Storm. Their 14 wins are the highest in school history.
