Monday, Jan. 23, Burapha – Stableford

Back to the A & B layouts this week where scores are generally higher than on the more difficult C & D courses, and one would have thought with the beautiful mild weather that there would have been some really big scores.

With 3 players scoring 37 points, it was all down to count backs as we often see nowadays, and Acco (David Atkinson) scored 16 points on the back nine to land him 5th spot overall.  In 4th with 19 points on the back nine was John Langley who held it together for another good round. Third place, with 21 points on the back nine, was Sel Wegner who came out top in the count back battle.

Taking second place was John O’Keefe with 38 points and after having his score added up wrong on the card, our tournament software was quick to point out the mistake which led to Ed Turner having 2 more points than he signed for and gave him the win with a great 39 points.

Wednesday, Jan. 25, Pattana – Matchplay

Our competition was another great success and thank you to Chrusi Balzli, the new President of the German Swiss Society for bringing his players to compete in this exciting format.  We have also made some significant progress to have the tournament sponsored and I am very happy to welcome David Thomas from Supersight and Graham Macdonald from Macallum Insurance.  With the support of these generous sponsors down the line, we will be able to grow and expand the tournament and make sure that all players in the tournament receive the benefits of the sponsorship as well as getting exposure for the great services that they offer to help our players.

Pattana is in great shape with the golf course being very busy at this time of the year.  Teeing off on the very difficult B course, (and C course on the back 9), we let the players go off the yellow tees today, something which greatly helped on a very windy day.  We will most likely settle on the white tees in future, depending on the circumstances, as the course did play rather short from the yellows and this raised some eyebrows from the lower handicappers.

Some big defeats were on the cards on both sides, but a few matches went to the last couple of holes.  The Outbackers came off worse for wear today, with the German Swiss Society taking the honours with a 3-2 win and taking the trophy with them for the next two months, after which we will battle it out against them again.

Friday, Jan. 27, Green Valley – Stableford

Our B division winners kept pace with the A division guys in scoring today and there were three players each scoring 37 points, not unlike Monday at Burapha where we also had three count-backs on 37 points.

In third place, with only 15 points on the back 9, was Stefan Hoge, edged off the second podium step by Stephen Watkins who had 20 points on the inward 9.  The winner, also with 37 points but scoring 21 on the back 9, was David Davies who was long overdue on a win.

In the A division, Neil Fidele’s 34 points (beating a couple of other players on count back), was good enough for third place.  John Stafford played very well off his 17 handicap to secure second with 37 points but Steve Plantwas the man of the day with a fabulous 39 points to hand him top honours.  Well done Steve!

The big winner on the day though was Neil John Lavery who was the only person that managed to secure a ‘2’ out of all the players today.
