Tuesday, March 13, Greenwood – Stableford

The test for this day was to be the A & C nines at Greenwood, and with the course having few visitors we were soon away.  This is a course with more grass on the fairways, a pleasure to hit the ball off but the caveat is that lush fairways and long grass in the rough also meant very slow greens.

Back early at base, it was soon into the results and in the A Flight, 0 to 23, the winner was Mashi Kaneta with 40 points ahead of John Davis with 37 on count-back over Andre Van Dyk in third.

In the B Flight, 24 up, the winner was Jim Ferris with a very impressive 47 points, one of the better scores of the year.  In second was Barry Elphick with 38 points and in third was Derek Brook with 36.

We had the usual best front nine and the best back nine of the non winners. Best front nine came from Brian Gabe with 23 points and in a three way count-back the best back-nine winner was Rob Brown over Nigel Perry and Buckers.

Friday, March 16, Bangpra – Stableford

The Tropical golfers decided to pay a long overdue visit to Bangpra where the lowering rates and reportedly good condition made a visit to the “monkey course” a must.  Weather was predicted to be quite warm but dry, and everyone got to the course and checked in quickly.

Bangpra is an interesting and scenic layout, with good facilities.  Where it often falls short is course condition and rates to PSC members.  However we were able to tee it up for a great green fee rate of 800 baht.  Plus we found the course in good condition and most of the greens in excellent shape.  The greens were quite slow however, and it took several holes to get used to that, and many never did.

The monkeys were out in force on the back nine and one caddie had to stand guard near the bags on some holes.

Scores were decent but lower than usual, probably due to putting woes.  In A-Flight (0-20), Tom Herrington (c/h 16) kept his mojo going with the best score of the day at 36 points.  Brian Parish (13) took count-back honors over Rob Brown (7) one shot back at 35 points, and John Davis (16) was in the hunt with 34 points.

In B-Flight (21+), Rita “I like comps” Zobeli (31) was happy to win her flight with a well played 35 points and Jim Ferris (26), coming off his record round last time, showed he is still swinging good and took the next spot with 34 points. Carole Kubicki (26) and Mick Coghlan (22) rounded out their flight with 30 and 29 points respectively.

Graham Buckingham and Brian Gabe had the best half rounds for non-winners.
