Monday, July 29, Khao Yai G.C. – Stableford

This was our first trip here as a society to Khao Yai and we had an individual competition on each day for two divisions and an overall winner over the two rounds.   The group was split at handicaps 10-20 and 22+ and we selected the yellow tees at 6,659 yards.

This is the Jack Nicklaus course that used to be Mission Hills but now has changed its name.  We were told in advance that it had wide fairways and this was not an exaggeration as we stood on the first tee and the landscape was stunning with volcanic hills surrounding the course.  As the groups returned there was praise all round for the layout, the condition of the course and excellent greens.

The best score of the day was the 40 points to win division 2 for Tony Cowe, with Glyn Evans in second place on 36, and Rod Howett third with 34.

There were two 39’s in division 1, both scoring 20 on the back nine but Tim Hake, a resident here, beat Lindsay Phillips 15/14 on the back-six count back.  Colin James took third with a ‘meagre’ 38.

There were some tough and long par 3’s here and not one person in either division got on the green on the back nine.  The winners on the front nine were (Div 1) Billy Fitzgerald and Chris Voller and (Div 2) Tony Cowe and Tim Hake.  There were no ‘2’s at all so two rollovers to Wednesday’s game at Panorama.

Following golf it was all back to Tim and Uan’s house for a fantastic BBQ and even the showers were not a problem.

Wednesday, July 31, Panorama – Stableford

After scoring a miserable 18 points at the Bonanza in the non-competition day on Tuesday, Tony Cowe was back in form today as he won division 2 with 38 points.  Mark Armstrong took second place in the flight after beating Rodney Howett on a 20/15 back nine count back, both on 30 points each.

Colin James returned a score of 38 points in division 1 to take the top honours, beating Lindsay Phillips with an amazing 23/20 on the back nine, and Tim Hake was in third spot eight points behind.

This was a tight course today; not quite as scenic as Monday but with some very interesting holes, especially the 10th where the fairway 100yds ahead of the tee slopes at a 45 degree angle from left to right and runs into an OB drain on the right – if you don’t carry 200 yards you are in trouble.

Near pins went to John Oxley, Lindsay Phillips (2), Mark Armstrong, Tony Cowe and Tim Hake.

Lindsay Phillips birdied the 11th for the only ‘2’ over the two days and he was a happy chap.

So the overall winner over the two days was Tony Cowe with 78 points ahead of Lindsay Phillips in second on 77, Colin James third with 76 and Tim Hake some way back in fourth on 69.  Well done Tony Cowe and many thanks to Tim and Uan for all their efforts and organizational skills.

Friday, August 2, Eastern Star – Stableford

There was a cool breeze coming off the coast today and very pleasant playing conditions for the 19 players out today, with the cut at 8-17 in division 1 and 18+ in division 2.  The greens here have improved slightly over recent weeks and work has just started to improve some of the holes.

An 18/18 back-nine count back and a 13/12 back-six count back saw Darryl Blair beat Marty Rock to claim top spot in division 1 with 34 points while Tony Thorne was third on 33.

Sean Bambury was the winner in division 2 with 30 points and Jim Sims beat the organizer on a 14/13 back-nine count back for second place after they both scored 28 points each.

Near pins went to Paul Butler (3), Alan Bissell, Peter Davies and Danny Greer.

There were no ‘2’s today in either division so a double rollover in both to the next Friday outing at Eastern Star.
