The Tropical Golf Group

Tuesday, Nov. 28, Greenwood – Stableford

Greenwood was fairly quiet and we played the A & B nines in that order.  The course looked good although the grass on the fairways seemed a little long.  However, with fast greens it was fine to play.

This was the ‘golfer of the month’ day so it was important to many of the golfers that they perform well.  In the A Flight, the winner was John Davis with 38 points on count-back over Andy Murray in second.  Taking third spot was Mashi Kaneta with 37 points.

In the B Flight we had slightly better scores and the winner with 42 points was Gordon Clegg.  Dave Cooper came in second with 41 points and Graham Buckingham was third with 38.

The non-winners best front nine score was 19 points by Brian Gabe (count-back over Mick Coghlan), and the back nine best score was 21 by Andre Van Dyk.

So we came to the BJ’s golfer of the month award and with his fine performance on the last day the winner was Gordon Clegg.

Friday, Dec. 1,
Mt. Shadow – Stableford

This Friday seventeen Tropical golfers headed out to Mountain Shadow to test their skills.  This is a tough course from the blue tees, but we must regretfully agree it is a fair test of golf.  Accuracy is the key here, and long hitters left drivers in the bag on many holes.

Scores were a bit on the low side as expected, but there were a large number in the “very low” range.  Fortunately those go unpublished here.

After a long absence Tom Herrington (c/h 18) found some rhythm and the winner’s circle in A-Flight with 36 points, the best of the day.  Just one short putt back was the returning Dick Warberg (18) with 35 points, followed by long hitting Steve Truelove (11) with 34.

Byron Nelson has golf’s and maybe all sports most impressive record with eleven consecutive wins.  Gordon Clegg (31) is trying to match that, having now earned honors in nine consecutive rounds, all but one or two as wins!  Despite a free-falling handicap Gordon won the B flight with 34 points, four ahead of Barry Elphick (25) in second, and the returning Karen Brown (35) took a curtsy with 28 points for third

Best nines (non winners) went to Brian Parish and Graham Buckingham.
