Monday, March 26, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Playing Mountain and Lakes today at Phoenix, it was a hot day until a breeze came up about half way round.  The course was in great condition as usual and the greens staff must have had a good morning as the pins were in places you could get at.

With 7 groups playing it was quite a quick round with no hold ups at all.  The scoring wasn’t terribly flash but I think that was down to the heat.  There was a count-back for third place with both players on 33 points but John Knight took it ahead of Paul Greenaway.  Second went to Graham Beaumont with 34 points and the top spot went to Miss Sasicha with a fine 40 points.

There were three ‘2’s today, coming from Thiery Petrement, Thiery Temime and Dougie Crowe.

Wednesday, March 28, Green Valley – Medal

It was a busy day today as it was the grand final of the last 12 Brian Chapman sponsored monthly medals and the first of the coming year’s competition.

The 24 finalists went off first followed by 34 others challenging for the monthly prize under the direction of today’s starter Fergus Brennan and, overall, the scores were very good.

We had 21 ladies playing today and to be mentioned in dispatches your score had to be below par and fourth place went to Miss Noodle with a 70, but edged out by Miss Eng who had 8 pars in her 69, the same score as Miss Poopay who had a better back nine to take place.  This was one shot behind this month’s winner, Miss Kran who had to overcome 2 double bogeys and a treble bogey to record a score of 68.  Birdie ‘2’s went to Miss Wan and Miss Noodle.

The men, as usual, lagged behind the ladies scores with Lloyd Shuttleworth occupying fourth place with a 70, his double bogey on the 15th gave Paul Smith the advantage on the countback for the last 6 holes.  Bob Newell came second with a net 71, but losing out to Greig Ritchie who had allsorts of numbers on his card, including an 8 on a par 5 to win his first monthly medal at just the third attempt.  Five 2s went to Alex Everden, Paul Hack, Tony Oakes, John Player and Seil Peters.

This year’s ladies champion was Miss Pin who overcame double bogeys on the first 2 holes and a treble on the 18th for a net score of 68.  Tony Oakes had a near disastrous front nine with a gross score of 46 but dropped only 1 shot to par on the return trip for a gross 36 and a winning score of net 71 to deny Bob Newell the men’s prize on a count-back.

Friday, March 30, Phoenix Gold – Scramble

The monthly scramble was held at the Phoenix Gold and with 11 teams playing we got away to an early start.

In this format if you can get the flat stick working you have a good chance of doing well and that’s what happened for the winners today.  The team of Ramsay Smith, Rick Culley Hank and Randy took third spot with 61.3 on a count back while second went to the Valley Hackers with 58.6.  The top team today was the Billabong squad, consisting of Paul Greenaway, Andy Butterworth, Greg Ritchie and Bob Philp with a net of 56.3.  It had been a long time since these lads were in the winners’ circle but today the putts fell in from everywhere.
