Sunday, Feb. 14, Green Valley – Medal

We had what has become our very popular Monthly Medal here today at Green Valley.  I am not sure what has happened to our group but today, apart from two very notable exceptions, the scoring was atrocious.  Maybe it was the day, St Valentine’s Day, and our players had other more romantic things on their minds instead of golf?  But whatever it was, the standard was very poor indeed and most of the players who got prizes will probably be embarrassed to see their names in the paper with the scores they had.

Dympna Burke.

As I said we had two notable exceptions and Rod Torrie was one of them as he won the A Flight with a net sixty six, a score that on most days would have won the Medal comfortably but not today.  In second place and nine shots behind Rod was Joe McArdle with a net seventy five.  One shot behind Joe were Norman Cheetham and Russell Gilroy on seventy six, with Norman edging the count back to come third.  Allan Parker had a net eighty and came fifth, beating two others on the count back.

In B Flight we had the best score we have had in a long time as Dympna Burke won the Medal with an unbelievable net sixty four.  This score was all the more impressive as Dympna has lost seven shots on her handicap over the past few months and she will be losing a few more after this performance.  Well done Dympna, an excellent score especially on a day when everyone else played so badly.

Second in B Flight and sixteen shots off the pace was John Walsh on a net eighty and Joe Peters was third on eighty one.  We had three players on eighty two with Theresa Connolly winning the count back to take the fifth place.  I won’t embarrass the other who had the same score and lost out on the count back by naming them.

Surprisingly on a day of such bad scoring we had five ‘2’s, with Norman Cheetham, Ger Lodge, Russell Gilroy, Paul Pavloff and Dympna Burke having one each.

A Flight

1st Rod Torrie (15) net 66

2nd Joe McArdle (14) net 75

3rd Norman Cheetham (16) net 76

4th Russell Gilroy (17) net 76

5th Paul Pavloff (7) net 80

B Flight

1st Dympna Burke (27) net 64

2nd John Walsh (18) net 80

3rd Joe Peters (19) net 81

4th Vincent Gras (18) net 82

5th Theresa Connolly (24) net 82

Thursday, Feb. 18, Eastern Star – Stableford

This was our second game for this week as we were rained off on Tuesday at Laem Chabang, which was unfortunate as we had a very large group.  However, we will soon be making a return visit there as they gave us very generous rain checks of fifty percent off our already discounted rate.

Joe Cuddy.

Today we were at Eastern Star, known as a difficult course and today it certainly came out the winner as none of our group managed to play to their handicaps.

The best score of the day was in B Flight which was won by our old friend and entertainer from Ireland, Joe Cuddy, who had thirty four points, one ahead of his best friend Gilbert Brossnan in second.  Joe Peters took the third place a further point back.

In the A Flight Joe McArdle was the winner with thirty two points while Barney Sheedy took second with thirty one and Teddy Lodge third with twenty seven.

We had no ‘2’s today.

As some of you will know, at this time of year we have another little competition going on within our group.  A young friend from Ireland comes over in the vain hope that he will beat one of the locals over a series of games while he is here.  Unfortunately for him, despite having a big advantage in both age and handicap he again had to accept defeat.  To make it even worse he decided to extend his holiday in the vain hope that he would manage to scrape a half in the match, but even that also ended in defeat.  Better luck next time!

A Flight

1st Joe McArdle (14) 32pts

2nd Barney Sheedy (10) 31pts

3rd Teddy Lodge (12) 27pts

B Flight

1st Joe Cuddy (21) 34pts

2nd Gilbert Brossnan (24) 33pts

3rd Joe Peters (19) 32pts
